The number of confirmed coronavirus (Covid-19) infections in Bangladesh has reached near 200,000, as the health authorities reported 2,733 new cases on Thursday, 131st day of the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

With the latest, the country’s number of Covid-19 infections now stands at 196,323 people, said Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) at a virtual press briefing today (Thursday).

The same day, the state-run DGHS has also registered 39 more fatalities from the deadly virus, taking the country’s total deaths to 2496.

Among the diseased, thirty-one were men and eight women, while one was between 0-10, one was between 11-20, two were between 31-40, three between 41-50, twelve between 51-60, fifteen between 61-70, four between 71-80, one was between 81-90 years old, Additional Director General of the DGHS Dr Nasima Sultana said.

Eighteen were from the Dhaka division, six from Chattogram, six from Khulna, three each from Sylhet and Rangpur divisions, two were from Barisal, and one was from the Rajshahi division.

Thirty-five people died in hospital, and four in their homes, the DGHS senior official added.

Simultaneously, 1940 people recovered from the respiratory disease, bringing the overall number of recovery to 106,963, Dr Nasima said.

A total of 12,889 samples were tested in 80 labs across the country during the period. With this, a total of 993, 291 samples have so far been tested in the country.

On Wednesday, 33 people died and 3,533 people tested positive for the highly infectious disease.

According to the state-run Directorate General of Health Services, 60,812 people now remain in both home and institutional quarantine while 18,031 others in isolation.

Globally, 13,716,411 people were infected with the novel coronavirus and 587,317 have died until Thursday 3:20 pm, according to Worldometer data.

Of the infected, 4,957,828 are currently being treated while 59,936 of them are in serious or critical condition, the website data shows.
