Coronavirus death toll crosses 1500-mark in Bangladesh

DGHS reports 38 more fatalities, 3480 fresh cases in 24 hrs

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Monday reported 38 deaths from the coronavirus (Covid-19), taking its total to over 1500.

Dr Nasima Sultana, Additional Director General of the DGHS, said at an online media briefing that "3480 new Covid-19 positive cases and 38 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours across the country."

"The total number of positive cases is now 115,786 and death toll stands at 1502," she added.

Among the deceased, 33 were men and five women, while one was aged between 11-20, three were between 21-30, one was between 31-40, three between 41-50, sixteen between 51-60, ten between 61-70, three between 71-80, and one was between 81-90 years old.

Fifteen deaths were from Dhaka division, twelve from Chattogram, two each from Mymensingh, Rajshahi, and Khulna divisions, four from Barisal, and one from Sylhet division.

Twenty-five people died in hospital, twelve died in their homes, and one was tested positive after death, the DGHS senior official added.

Simultaneously, 1,676 people recovered from the respiratory disease, bringing the overall number of recovery to 86,555, Dr Nasima said.

A total of 15,555 samples were tested in 62 labs across the country during the period. With this, a total of 627,719 samples have so far been tested in the country.

On Sunday, 39 people died and 3,500 people tested positive for the highly infectious disease.

According to the state-run Directorate General of Health Services, 63,896 people now remain in both home and institutional quarantine while 12,467 others in isolation.

Globally, the virus has so far infected 9,060,969 people and killed 470,940 of them, according to Worldometer data.

Of the infected, 3,742,596 are currently being treated while 54,742 of them are in serious or critical condition, the website data shows.
