CUMILLA: The number of coronavirus infected people and deaths in Cumilla is increasing day by day. From April 1 to 21 this month, 65 people died of corona in the district.
In this situation, the pressure of the patients infected with coronavirus has increased in the Covid-19 Dedicated Hospital located on the premises of Cumilla Medical College Hospital. The people involved in the hospital are now facing problem to cope with the extra pressure of the patients. Along with doctors, patients and their relatives are suffering from the crisis of bed and intensive care unit (ICU).
To cope with the situation, the district coronavirus prevention committee is making arrangements to treat coronavirus patients in new hospitals. In the meantime, four more hospitals have been added for the treatment of corona patients. One of the four hospitals is Cumilla Sadar (General) Hospital. The other three are private medical college hospitals. These are Eastern Medical College Hospital, Mainamati Medical College Hospital and Central Medical College Hospital.
According to the District Civil Surgeon's Office, the only Covid-19 dedicated hospital in Cumilla has only 18 ICU beds. There are also 116 common beds. However, 20 to 30 more patients are being admitted here every day than the prescribed number of beds. In addition, about 30 more patients are waiting to be admitted to the ICU.
In this situation, four more hospitals in Cumilla have taken initiative to treat the corona patients. Among them, Nawab Faizunnesa Dedicated Corona Ward has been started at Cumilla Sadar (General) Hospital for the treatment of patients. On April 20, Cumilla Sadar MP AKM Bahauddin Bahar inaugurated the corona unit.
A 30-bed corona ward has been set up at the Sadar Hospital in Cumilla as the number of coronavirus patients is increasing day by day and the pressure of corona patients from the surrounding districts is increasing. AKM Bahauddin Bahar inaugurated the 20-bed corona unit at Eastern Medical College Hospital in Cumilla on April 21. He will soon inaugurate 20 more corona units at Mainamati Medical College Hospital and Central Medical College Hospital.
AKM Bahauddin Bahar, MP, chief adviser to the district coronavirus prevention committee, said four more new corona units have been set up in Cumilla to treat the rapidly growing coronavirus patients. Corona patients will be treated in these hospitals. All kinds of measures have been taken in these hospitals including supply of oxygen for the treatment of patients. Even then, if the number of corona patients continues to rise, the corona unit at Sadar Hospital will have 100 beds.
According to the District Civil Surgeon's Office, a total of 11,511 corona patients have been identified in Cumilla district till Wednesday (April 21) evening. Of these, 9,242 people have recovered. 353 people died. The first corona patient was identified in the district on April 7 last year. The death occurred on April 11 of that year. Then on June 3 last year, Corona Hospital was opened in the courtyard of Cumilla Medical College Hospital. The most Infected and dead are in Cumilla city.
Meanwhile, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal has taken initiative to set up Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in three hospitals in his constituency. ICU beds have already been set up at Sadar Dakshin Upazila Health Complex, Nangalkot Upazila Health Complex and Bagmara 20-bed hospital in Lalmai Upazila in collaboration with the minister's initiative and Abul Khair Group to provide services to those infected with coronavirus.
Each hospital has two ICU beds. Besides, other medical equipment have also been provided in these hospitals for the treatment of corona sufferers. In the next few days, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal will simultaneously inaugurate ICU services in these three hospitals through video conferencing. He will also inaugurate the indoor service of Sadar Dakshin Upazila Health Complex at the same time.
