Coriander cultivation raises hope among Magura growers

MAGURA, Feb 12: Coriander cultivation is gaining popularity among the cultivators of the district.

Sources said, Magura farmers are showing high interest in coriander production for low cost, fair price and availability of seeds.

Repeated bumper yield is the main reason for expanding the farming of the spice crop.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Magura, sources said around five years ago, coriander was cultivated on 395 hectares of land in the district. This year the cultivation area has stood at 730 hectares.

Farmer Shitish Chandra of Bazruk Sreekunthi village under Magura Sadar said he is growing the crop one bigha of land and expecting around six maunds of yield.

"If existing price prevails, I would be able to make a profit of Tk 24,000 this season", he added.

Another farmer Titash Raha of Joka village under Sreepur upazila said, "I have been growing coriander over the last four years. This year I am cultivating the item on 60 decimals of land and expecting an abundant production."

Magura DAE official Shohrab Hossen said coriander cultivation has raised hope among farmers. Soil and weather of the area are congenial for coriander cultivation. Coriander cultivation is increasing in the district every year.
