Cold wave continues to grip Bangladesh

Monday's lowest temp recorded at 5.5 degrees Celsius in Srimangal

The cold wave sweeping over Bangladesh may continue until tomorrow (Tuesday), according to an official at Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

Abdul Mannan, a meteorologist at BMD told The Financial Express on Monday noon that a severe to moderate cold is sweeping over the country and will continue until Tuesday.

The country’s lowest temperature of 5.5 degrees Celsius, which is also the season’s lowest, was recorded in Srimangal (Moulvibazar), he mentioned.

However, Bangladesh's Kurigram district, earlier on Sunday, also witnessed the same temperature.

On January 8, 2018, Bangladesh, which typically sees its coldest spell in January, recorded 2.6 degrees Celsius in Tentulia district, the country’s lowest temperature ever in its history.

A Met Office bulletin, issued this morning said severe cold wave is sweeping over Nilphamari, Chuadanga and Moulvibazar districts.

Mild to moderate cold wave is also sweeping over Dhaka, Mymensingh, Rajshahi & Barishal divisions and elsewhere over Rangpur & Khulna divisions and the regions of Sitakunda, Rangamati, Cumilla, Feni, Sandwip and Hatiya and it may continue, as per the bulletin.

In its next 72-hour forecast, the Met Office says that temperature may rise.

It also forecasted that the weather will remain dry over the country. Moderate to thick fog may occur over the country from midnight to morning.

Night and day temperature may rise slightly over the country, according to the forecast.

The met office regular bulletin also reads ridge of Sub-continental high extends up to West Bengal and adjoining area. Seasonal low lies over South Bay.

The sun sets at 5:45 pm on Monday, according to the Met Office forecast, while it rises at 6:39 am on Tuesday in Dhaka.
