State minister for shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury has expressed his hope that the waterways around the capital city will get back its lost beauty within next 10 years.

The junior minister came up with the statement at the inaugural function of 'Maritime Safety Week-2019' at Sadarghat terminal in Dhaka on Saturday, reports BSS.

“The government is working relentlessly for restoration of waterways with taking measures to free the riverbanks from encroachment and prevent river pollution to make the waterways more accessible to people,” he said.

The government has done a lot in dredging rivers in last 10 years, he said, adding that “New dredgers have been brought and the process of collecting more dredgers is on to bring back the lost beauty of the rivers”.

Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Shipping Ministry Major (Retd) Rafiqul Islam and Shipping Secretary Mohammad Abdus Samad were present at the function.

After the inaugural function, a naval rally led by the state minister was brought out from the Sadarghat launch terminal.

The ‘Maritime Safety Week-2019’ will end on April 5 next.
