City dwellers suffer gravely due to shortage of gas supply

Residents of different areas of the city suffered immensely on Tuesday as household gas crisis, caused due to the damage of the gas feeder pipeline in Savar, hit them acutely.

Residents in Mohakhali, Mirpur, Lalmatia, Mohammadpur, Dhanmondi, Jigatola, Hazaribagh and Kalabagan had to subside for meals from restaurants since early morning, when the feeder line leaked during road-works by the Roads and Highways Department.

Officials of Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company said the gas supply will be normal by 7:00pm.

In recent months, residents of different areas in the city have been suffering from the shortage of pipeline gas due to an inadequate supply.

The reason behind the dearth of supply has been attributed to the reduced import of LNG due to a rise in the price of the fossil fuel in international spot market.

To meet the demand of gas, Bangladesh needs at least 525 mmcf/d (million cubic feet per day) of imported liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Million cubic feet per day (mmcf/d) is a unit of measurement used to express the amount of fluid (gas, water etc.) that is consumed, produced or traversed in a pipeline on any given day.

Residents of the areas, hit by shortages of gas supply on Tuesday, complained that they had to adhere to food from restaurants instead of home cooked meals.

Ms. Ruma, a resident of Dhanmondi told The Financial Express that she could not cook food in the morning due to the poor gas pressure.

The supply was not normal until 3:30pm, she added.

Lutfor Rahman, a resident in Mirpur’s Rupnagar area, said they did not receive gas supply from early morning till late evening.

Salekin, a resident in Mohammadpur area, told the FE that his house owners used cylinder gas as there was no gas supply.

Talking to The Financial Express at 5:30pm, Engr. Ali Iqbal Md. Nurullah, Managing Director, Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company, said the repairing work of gas line is underway.

The gas supply may become normal by 7:00pm and sufferings of the people in those areas will be ended, the Titas MD added.
