A day after the nagging traffic congestion Dhaka city became less chaotic on Thursday as a good number of city-dwellers left the capital cashing in on a three-day holiday.
From the morning, traffic managers were seen passing relaxed time in the city streets with public transports carrying lesser number of passengers.
With traffic becoming thinner, the city-dwellers got a respite from the usual hustle and bustle. Commuters moved without hazards in the city and breathed better in absence of snarl and air pollution.
Mohammad Rafiq, a traffic officer, said many people left Dhaka city on Wednesday evening for various destinations through bus, launch and trains to enjoy the holidays for three consecutive days.
"That's why we experienced terrific traffic jam yesterday (Wednesday) throughout the city. Today, things are very calm and not that much noisy," he added.
The 72-hour holiday began from Thursday on the occasion of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu's birthday or national children's day followed by two weekly holidays on Friday and Saturday.
Many people chose to utilise the occasion by going to their village homes or visit some tourist spots with their family as part of their recreation plans.
Shopping centres, shops and markets were also less crowded while movement of rickshaws, auto-rickshaws and minibuses decreased and those plied with fewer number of passengers on board.
Main thoroughfars and important roads of the city were calmer on Thursday compared to the previous day when those were crammed with pedestrians and vendors.
