BOGURA, Oct 15: Farmers of Adamdighi upazila in the district are worried over the sudden price fall of off-season chilli.
Good number farmers of Jenoir, Boshipur, Pushinda, Nasaratpur and Jhakoir villages under the upazila are incurring heavy losses due to the low rate.
High production, inadequate storage capacity and poor transport facility are the main reasons of the price fall.
Each kg of chilli is being sold at Tk 10 to Tk 15 in the retail markets and Tk 8.0 to Tk 10 in the wholesale markets.
Farmers generally spend Tk 30 to Tk 50 to produce the same amount of the item.
District kitchen market monitor office source said the price may rise next week.
Harvest of the spice item started in the middle of August and will continue until November.
Traders in the region said they transport the item to the different districts, including Dhaka, Chattrogram, Sylhet and Narayanganj mitigating local demand.
But, now they cannot export the spice due to bad condition of the Naogaon-Dhaka connecting road.
Deputy director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Bogura, Protul Chandra Sarker said chilli was high in the district this season. Surplus supply is the main for this situation.
