Child dies in Noakhali as cyclone Fani moves inland

A two-year-old child has died and 30 people were injured in Noakhali's Subarnachar upazila as cyclone Fani has moved over Bangladesh.

The casualties resulted from the collapse of 100 mud-and-stick houses in gusty winds.

The dead has been identified as Mohammad Ismail, son of Aminul Haque, a resident of a coastal area in Subarnachar Upazila.

The injured have been admitted to the local upazila health complex, local media reported.

Fani that has turned into a cyclonic storm from a severe cyclonic storm has moved over Satkhira, Jashore and Khulna regions and adjoining areas, according to a government special bulletin on the storm.

It is likely to move in a north-northeasterly direction further inland over the country, said the bulletin issued by the Meteorological Department at 8:32am on Saturday.

Under the influence of the cyclonic storm, the sky remains overcast and rain/thunder showers with gusty/squally wind is continuing all over the country.

The maximum sustained wind speed within 54 kms of the storm centre is about 62 kph rising to 88 kph in gusts/ squalls.

Bangladesh has been experiencing the peripheral effect of ‘Fani’ since Friday morning, with a number of villages and shoals already being inundated  in coastal districts.
