Chaos over eviction in N'ganj: Mayor Ivy comes under attack

Feud between mayor Selina Hayat Ivy and lawmaker Shamim Osman flared up in Narayanganj again on Tuesday centring over hawker eviction.

Narayanganj city mayor Selina Hayat Ivy came under attack at Chashara area of the city during a clash centring over hawker eviction on Tuesday.

At least 30 other people, including journalists, were also injured in the melee that took place in the afternoon.

The mayor's followers blamed local Awami League lawmaker AKM Shamim Osman and his supporters for the attack.

Ivy later talked to the journalists following the attack. She claimed, "Shamim Osman directly gave the order to launch attack on me."

She also demanded removal of Narayanganj's Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police accusing the officials of being sympathetic towards Shamim Osman-led group.

A tense situation was prevailing in the city.

A feud between Shamim Osman and Selina Hayat Ivy ensued after the former declared to let hawkers ply their trade on city footpaths from Tuesday, a move vehemently opposed by the latter.

Ivy took to the street in front of the Nagar Bhaban in the afternoon in support of the eviction drive along with her hundreds of supporters. A chaos ensued soon after between them and the anti-eviction group.

Reports say Shamim Osman later had his showdown with hundreds of followers joining him in the afternoon.

The city corporation and the district administration earlier jointly evicted hawkers from the streets, which was protested by Shamim.
