The four-day celebration marking Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore's Sylhet visit 100 years ago began in the city on Tuesday morning through a colourful procession.
Starting from the Nagar Bhaban, the procession paraded the city streets before ending in the district stadium area.
Celebration committee convener AMA Muhith, also former finance minister, spoke at the beginning while the committee member-secretary city mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury addressed at the end of the procession. Hundreds of enthusiastic people took part in the procession.
Besides, the opening day's programme included unveiling of a mural of the poet in the Chandnighat area in the afternoon. Celebration committee convener AMA Muhith formally unveiled it in presence of a good number of cultural activists, including students and young people.
Brahma Mandir, Sylhet took out a procession and held separate discussion and cultural event on the day.
These were followed by dance, poetry recitation and cultural function held with over 500 children taking part in the evening at Chandnighat area. A discussion meeting and a cultural function was held at the Nazrul auditorium in the evening.
On Day-2 Wednesday, separate events would be held at the Manipuri habitat Masimpur, MC College and at the Singhabari in the city's Chouhatta area as the poet had joined events at those places. Planning Minister MA Mannan would join the event at Singhabari as the chief guest.
On Day-3 III and Day-4, programmes would be held at the Sylhet Stadium with artistes from Dhaka and India. Besides, photograph exhibition and discussion meeting would be held at the Mohammad Ali Gymnasium.
On November 08, Tagore exponent Rizwana Chowdhury Banya and artistes from India would join poetry recitation and Tagore songs presentation at the stadium. Discussion would be held there.
Foreign Minister AKA Momen is expected to present as the chief guest at the concluding day's programme same day while State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid would be the special guest.
