The electoral environment is gradually going down, says Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda, stressing the need for electronic voting machines (EVMS) to overcome the crisis.

“Rigging cannot be prevented even after taking strict steps about this,” he said at a workshop meant for the training of the fifth upazila parisad election trainers at the Election Training Institute in Dhaka’s Agargaon on Friday.

“That is why, we are thinking about introducing EVMs in which there is no scope for rigging in the EVMs system,” he added.

The Election Commission plans to hold the upazila polls in five phases, first on March 10, second on March 18, third on March 24, fourth on March 31 and last and fifth on June 18, local media reports say.

The Election Commission faced massive rigging allegations by BNP-led opposition alliance during the general election in December 2018.
