The government has taken a mega project involving Tk 56.16 billion to remove water logging from the port city.
The Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) will implement the project under the supervision of Bangladesh Army Engineering Department from this month.
The CDA chairman Abdus Salam said, "There is no uncertainty over the implementation of the mega water logging project."
He has said this while speaking at a meeting with the authorities of CDA and Bangladesh Army Engineering Department at the CDA auditorium.
Salam said as per meeting, the preliminary works will begin this month while the remaining work will be implemented in phases.
The project entities include re-excavation of 36 canals within the city areas, construction of 12 sluice gates and pump house on the estuary of six canals, construction of six culverts.
Moreover, procurement of necessary equipment, cleaning of 320km long existing drains, construction of retaining wall of 178 kilometres, construction of 48 girder bridges, re-excavation of all existing drains in 302 kilometre areas and installation of 880 electric poles are included in the mega project.
Water logging has made the life of people in the port city miserable as most of roads remain submerged during the rainy season.
In August, 2017, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the mega project with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
The prime minister directed the Local Government Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD) ministry to scrutinise the project profile carefully by its technical committee.
Ministry of LGRD constituted a technical committee consisting representatives from CDA, Chittagong City Corporation, Chittagong WASA, Water Development Board and Engineering core of Bangladesh Army.
Chief Engineer of the Chittagong development authority was made member secretary of the committee.
A number of meetings of the technical committee were held with Chief Engineer of Engineering Department of Bangladesh Army, said the report.
