CCC demands Tk1.0b for maintaining canals

CHATTOGRAM: Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) has demanded Tk 1.0 billion (100 crore) from a mega project to maintain the canals of the port city.

CCC Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury said, "Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) is implementing the mega project of Tk 60.00 billion to solve water-logging problem in some canals permanently. But we need Tk 1.0 billion for maintenance of the canals."

A coordination meeting of the CDA and CCC held at the CCC office on Wednesday.

CCC mayor said, "The CCC maintains the drains and roads in the city. So, we need Tk1.0 billion to continue the work."

CDA Chairman Zahirul Alam Duvash said the engineering corps of Bangladesh Army started the work of the mega project involving Tk 60.00 billion on April 24, 2018, with approval for 'canal re-excavation, extension, renovation and development to resolve water-logging in the city.

"The LGRD, housing and public works and water resources ministries and the CCC have been made parts of the project instead of giving the responsibility to the CDA alone," he added.

He further said, "People of Chattogram will get the benefit of the project which is being executed by the Bangladesh Army for resolving the water-logging crisis.

"But, if the dredging work in the Karnaphuli River is not done, water-logging could not be removed from Chattogram," he said.
