JOYPURHAT, July 31: Hundreds of cattle rearers across the district have been facing acute fodder shortage over the last couple of weeks.
Many cattle rearers of the area said they have no way but to purchase grass from the market at a high rate.
"It is hard for us to bear the extra cost", the rearers added.
In a recent visit to Digdair Bazar under Joypurhat Sadar this correspondent found sellers of varieties of grasses are making an extra profit due to high demand.
Each bundle (weighing 2.0 to 5.0 kg) of Barshali paddy is being sold at Tk 30 to Tk 50, weed at Tk 30 to Tk 35 and Napier grass at Tk 50 to Tk 55 in the local market.
"I have five milch cows. I have to spend Tk 200 to Tk 220 to purchase over 20 kg of grass along with other items," said farmer Jamil Uddin of Sadar upazila".
Grass seller Alamgir Hossain of Digdair village under Sadar upazila said he earns around Tk 400 to Tk 500 per day by selling grass.
District livestock office sources said if the weather remains favourable the problem will be solved within a few days.
