BOGURA, Dec 17: Carrot growers in the district are happy over the present market price of their produce.

A good number of farmers have attained financial solvency by growing carrot in winter.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said carrot grows well in the area. Every season many farmers cultivate the winter delicacy and make a good profit.

Each kg of carrot is selling at Tk 60 to Tk 70 in the retail markets and Tk 50 to Tk 55 in the wholesale markets.

Sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Faridur Rahman said growers start farming the vegetable from September for starting harvest in December.

Over 230 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of carrot in the district this season with the production target of over 200 tonnes.

"I have cultivated carrot on four decimals of land this season and am expecting to make a profit of Tk 20,000," said farmer Anzar Hossain under Shibganj upazila.

During a recent visit to Jhinoir village under Adamdighi upazila this correspondent saw carrot farmers were busy harvesting their produce in the fields.

Sources said locally-produced carrots are also sent to Chattogram, Dhaka and Sylhet after meeting local demand, said trader Kamal Hossain.

Deputy Director of DAE Md Abul Kashem Azad said, "We have provided all sorts of agri-input among the farmers to make the carrot cultivation programme a success."
