Amendment of river commission law is essential to protect the endangered rivers, haor and waterbodies in the country, said experts.
They made the remarks at a function titled ‘Endangered Rivers, Protection of Haor-Water Bodies and Livelihood of People: Our Measures’ at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the capital on Saturday.
At the programme, they also put emphasis on the co-ordinated efforts of the people, National River Commission and non-government organisations to ensure stringent punishment of river grabbers and polluters, said a press release.
“In the last 20-30 years, the endangerment of rivers, haor and water bodies have increased. Some corrupt representatives and powerful politicians are responsible for it,” added the participants.
National River Protection Commission Dr Mojibur Rahman Hawlader was present as the chief guest, while chairperson of ALRD and also coordinator of Nijera Kori Khushi Kabir chaired the function.
Executive Director of ALRD Shamsul Huda gave the welcome speech at the event.
