The cabinet has approved a proposal for amending the Representation of the People Order.
The approval has opened the way for the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the upcoming national parliamentary election, reports bdnews24.com.
The decision was made at a cabinet meeting on Monday chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The cabinet secretary highlighted several aspects of the meeting to the media afterwards at the Secretariat.
The new proposal, known as the Representation of the People’s (Amendment) Act 2018, would allow the use of EVMs alongside ballot papers.
Cabinet Secretary Md Shafiul Alam said that the amendment would be issued in the form of an ordinance as there was insufficient time to pass it through parliament ahead of the upcoming election.
