Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam on Tuesday said that the corporation seeks a solution regarding the business centres and offices in the residential areas by holding meeting with Rajuk next week as the corporation cannot issue trade licenses for those establishments.

The mayor also announced that Tk 4.0 billion revenue will be collected in this fiscal year (FY '21). Of that, Tk 1.0 billion will be collected from trade licenses.

The city dwellers will be able to pay the holding tax through online from January next year, he added.

"There are many residential areas with shops at the first floor. I will call Rajuk to come to my office next week. How are these businesses operating in the residential areas?" Mayor Atiq asked.

The city corporation has no mandate to issue trade license for the establishments in the residential areas, he said.

The mayor was speaking at the inaugural programme of the combing drive for revenue collection at 17 wards of two zones - Zone-2 and Zone-5. The inaugural programme was held at the 33 ward councilors' office at Mohammadpur.

Mr Atiq said that the DNCC citizens will be able to pay their taxes from home from January 2021 as per the manifesto of 'Sabai Mile Sabar Dhaka'.

"There are lots of big billboards set up in the city which are illegal. Those, whoever has done this, will be brought under tax net," he said.

After inauguration of the combing drive, the mayor visited business centres, banks, super shops and houses of the area. The corporation magistrate fined half a dozen establishments Tk 0.56 million for not having trade license, keeping goods on the footpaths and illegal advertisements.

The penalised establishments were--- Shahjalal Bakery, Swapna super shop, Vision Electronics, Partex Furniture, Mir Ceramic and KAI aluminum.

The DNCC has formed a six-member committee for each ward with the ward councilor convenor and the councilor of reserved seat joint convenor. One deputy tax officer has been included as the member secretary of the committee. The committee will identify the houses and business establishments which are not paying tax.
