Buses to be launched on three more routes

Without much improvement in the pilot bus service for bus route rationalisation (BRR), the special committee on Tuesday reaffirmed to launch buses on three more routes in the city in the next three months.

The committee took the decision at its meeting held with Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh in the chair on Tuesday.

In line with the decision taken at a meeting held on February 07, the committee gave necessary directives to the authorities concerned to complete infrastructure work, including preparing passenger sheds, towards launching 225 buses on the routes no. 22, 23 and 26 under Green Cluster in 90 days.

However, sources said the committee did not have talks on settling down the problems faced by Dhaka Nagar Paribahan which was formed to operate buses on the pilot route from Ghattarchar to Katchpur through Sat Masjid Road and Shahbagh.

Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam co-chaired the 22nd meeting of the committee also attended by its members, including designated heads of Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA), Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation and Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Representatives from transport owners and workers' associations participated in the meeting with Dr SM Salauddin as consultant.

The DNCC mayor said the meeting permitted to operate 50 buses on route no. 22, 100 buses on route no. 23 and 75 buses on route no. 26 and bus operators will be selected through a tender process.

Briefing reporters, the mayor also said the meeting decided to allow plying of 20 more buses on the pilot route by Trans Silva and 40 others by Jahan Enterprise.
