BOGURA, Oct 23: Banana growers in the district are delighted over the bumper production and fair market prices this season.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said banana farming is expanding in the area.
Farmers have shown more interest in growing banana on a large scale.
Many farmers are now engaged in banana production leaving paddy cultivation, DAE officials said.
The DAE provides all necessary support to the growers in this connection, the officials added.
A good number of farmers in Kahaloo, Shibganj, Sonatola, Dupchanchia, Sherpur, Dhunot, Adamdighi, Gabtoly, Nandigram, Shajanpur and Sadar upazilas of the district have been producing banana on commercial basis.
Most of them have attained financial solvency by growing the popular and tasty fruit.
Sub-assistance agriculture officer of DAE Azizur Rahman said farmers have already made a profit over Tk 200 million this season and are expecting Tk 230 million more.
Farmer Kamrul Hasan of Shibganj upazil said he cultivated Sagor banana variety on 45 decimals of land this season spending Tk 30,000. He is expecting to make more than Tk 0.1 million.
Trader Abdus Wadud of Mokamtola Bazar said they transport locally-produced banana to other districts due to high demand.
Deputy Director of DAE Protul Chardra Sarker said banana farming is profitable. "We always encourage the farmers to grow the item commercially for more profit", he added.
