NAOGAON, Sept 30: Farmers in Mohadevpur upazila of the district are happy due to bumper turmeric yield and low expenses in cultivation.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said around 110 hectares of land have been brought under turmeric cultivation in 10 unions of the Upazila.
During a recent visit in Mahinagar, Kumirdaha, Kalna, Sherpur, Mahishbathan, Enayetpur, Natshal, Gopalpur, Shibganj, Sultanpur, Patkata, Gofanagar, Ramchandrapur, Kunjaban, Fazilpur and Madhuban areas of the Upazila, this correspondent saw farmers taking care of their turmeric fields.
One Abdur Razzak of village Mahinagar under the upazila cultivated turmeric of different varieties including BARI-1. Like other growers in the district, he is expecting a bumper yield of turmeric this year.
He said, "One can get 40 to 50 maunds of turmeric per bigha of land and I am expecting that the produce will be sold at Tk 1,000 to Tk 1,200 per maund this year."
Upazila agriculture officer Jahangir Alam Pramanik said growers of the area are expecting a bumper production of turmeric due to favourable climate condition from beginning of the season.
Use of organic fertiliser has reduced the costs of turmeric cultivation, Mr Pramanik added.
