The state-run television channel Bangladesh Television (BTV) is celebrating its 53rd founding anniversary on Monday with a range of special programmes.

BTV started its journey on December 25 in 1964 with the name of Dhaka Television, first of its kind in the subcontinent.

Dhaka Television launched its test transmission from a small floor of DIT Building. Later, it was renamed to Bangladesh Television in 1972, just after the independence of the country in 1971, according to a news agency report.

Apart from broadcasting news, BTV gained popularity among the viewers through airing different kinds of programmes including plays, feature films, education, magazine programmes, and documentaries.

Marking the day, Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury greeted the officials, staff, and artistes of the television channel.
