BTRC suspends 3G, 4G services

The telecom regulatory commission has instructed the mobile operators to shut down 3G and 4G services across the country ahead of the general election tomorrow (Sunday).

In an email sent to the mobile operators, BTRC told them to postpone 3G and 4G services until 12:01am Monday.

However, it has also instructed to keep 2G internet available during this period.

Immediately after receiving the BTRC instruction, mobile operators slowed down the mobile internet services to 2G across the country.

The latest BTRC move means that the mobile internet users will not be able to carry out any activities that may require heavy data flow.

At the same time, regular activities like uploading photos or streaming videos will not be possible. Users may also struggle to run many useful apps which use copius amounts of data.

The latest BTRC move came just a day after mobile internet was also slowed down for 10 hours from 10:00pm Thursday to 8:00am Friday.

The decision to slow down the mobile internet was taken earlier during a meeting between the Election Commission and BTRC.

At present, there are 91.8 million internet subscribers in the country. Out of this, around 86 million are mobile internet subscribers.
