BRAC International has started evacuating its Bangladeshi and other expatriate staffers from Afghanistan amid invasion of Taliban forces in all major cities of the country.
BRAC has a total of 14 expatriate staffers in its team in Afghanistan, of which 12 are Bangladeshi nationals.
Of its staffers, three Bangladeshis are currently on their way back home and the remaining six are expected to leave Afghanistan by August 22, according to a media statement issued by BRAC.
Besides, the rest five officials including three Bangladeshis, who were on home leave, have been asked not to return to Afghanistan.
The Bangladeshi NGO, largest in the world, has around 3,000 staffers working on ten projects in different provinces of the South Asian country.
"BRAC International is implementing mitigation measures to minimise the risks to the safety and security of our staffs and the communities we serve, which is our highest concern," said Shameran Abed, executive director for BRAC International.
BRAC is ensuring safety and security of its staffs in Afghanistan amidst the escalating violence and volatile environment, the statement added.
BRAC has been working in Afghanistan for more than 19 years, providing underserved communities with services including education, healthcare, community development, Covid-19 related support, humanitarian and food security assistance.
