NETRAKONA: The farmers in the district are busy preparing seedbeds and seedlings of Boro paddy in Haor areas as the Aman cultivation is over.
According to the Netrakona Agricultural Extension Department, the target for Aman cultivation in 10 upazilas of the district has been fixed at 130,760 hectares of land while target for seedbed preparation is 9,540 hectares. Already farmers have prepared seedbeds on 5,260 hectares of land.
Farmers of 08 unions including the municipality of Madan upazila are busy readying seedbeds. Preparations are underway to plant Boro lands along with seedbeds.
The families of the farmers in the Haor area depend only on Boro. Farmers in the Haor region live on round the year with the income from the Boro production.
Peasants of Gobindshree village of Madan upazila are busy preparing seedbeds. Many of them are cultivating land for planting seedlings.
Shaheen Mia, a farmer from Balali village, said they are preparing seedbeds. After completing seedbed, the land would be prepared for planting. In a few days, it will be time to plant seedlings in seedbed. Now we are passing busy time, he added.
According to the Upazila Agriculture Office, the target was achieved by Boro cultivation on 17,340 hectares of land in the upazila last year. The Upazila Agriculture Office claims that the target for Boro cultivation will be higher this year.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Habibur Rahman said farmers are now busy preparing seedbeds for Boro cultivation.
"The people in my office are advising farmers about the preparation of seedbeds and the collection of good quality seeds. This year, we express the hope to achieve the target".
