Border killing going on despite Indian assurances to stop it, says FM

Missions asked to raise investment, trade

The killing of Bangladeshis on the Indo-Bangladesh border is going on despite assurances from the highest level of the Indian government that there will be no killing on the border, foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen told the reporters on Monday.

Responding to a question the minister said that Bangladesh has been taking all kinds of efforts to stop border killing.

“It is not our failure. You should also find out why that man is killed” the minister said when asked to comment on the killing of a Bangladeshi on the very first day of the new year.

According to reports, Indian Border Security Force on Sunday shot a Bangladeshi youth to death on the Bangladesh-India international border at Burimari under Patgram upazila in Lalmonirhat.

The latest killing of 20-year-old Bipul Hossain was the fourth shooting death since December 15.

Bipul was the son of Rashidul Islam of Gatiar Vita village of Patgram upazila.

Bangladesh law enforcement officials said that the latest incident took place at about 4:00 am near the border pillar 843 on the Burimari-Changrabandha frontier with India.

Earlier, briefing the journalists the minister said that all the missions abroad have been asked to find ways and means to enhance export and  FDI.

We have told our envoys to work on how to find out new markets for our products and to suggest what kind of products are in demand in the countries, where they are posted.

The missions are also asked to counter any disinformation about the country proactively.

“Usually they do not respond to such false propaganda on their own. Rather, they are waiting for our direction but I have told them that they are the extension of the foreign ministry and they should be responsive proactively” the minister added.

Dr Momen said that the missions were also asked to list the names of eminent personalities in their respective countries aiming at engaging these people in public diplomacy on behalf of Bangladesh.

About the meeting owing the law and home minister, he said that the meeting decided to form a committee to gather facts and news about Bangladesh.

So that if any misinformation regarding Bangladesh can be addressed, he said adding that the committee would also gather positive news regarding Bangladesh.
