‘Border killing during PM’s India visit shocking’

The killing of a Bangladeshi on Indian border during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to Delhi is shocking, said Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen on Sunday.

“This is undoubtedly painful and shocking for the family members and for us too,” said Mr Masud when asked to comment on the incident.

He said that the ministry is yet to get details of the incident.

According to reports, a 17-year-old Bangladeshi boy was shot dead by India's Border Security Force (BSF) along Dainur border in Dinajpur Sadar upazila on September 7.

The deceased was identified as Minhajul Islam, son of Jahangir Hossain of Khanpur (Bhitarpara) village in Dinajpur Sadar upazila and a class nine student of Khanpur High School, said Abu Bakar Siddique, chairman of Khanpur Union.

The chairman told the media that the BSF personnel opened fire when Minhajul and 8/10 others went near the border of main pillar number 315 of Dainur border.

“We have a commitment from the top level of the Indian government that they would bring border killing to zero, and recently we have seen a rapid fall in the number of such incidents” he added.

We hope that such an undesirable incident would not take place in future, he said.

Asked about Bangladesh’s move over the firing by the Myanmar army on the Bangladesh border, the foreign secretary said that the government is keeping close surveillance on the matter.

The foreign ministry recently summoned the Myanmar envoy a few days ago, and he assured that it had nothing to do with Bangladesh.

The falling of some mortar shells inside Bangladesh territory was unintentional and was done by mistake, the envoy told the foreign ministry.

Responding to a question the foreign secretary said that he did not think that the firing Rakhine State is not part of any scheme centring Rohingya.
