Bogura fish cultivators making windfall profit

BOGURA, May 09: Indigenous fish cultivators in the district are making good profit this season.

Officials at the local Fisheries Department said people are showing more interest in fish cultivation for high profit.

"People start using unused ponds to cultivate fish. Commercial fish farming is expanding for good output and lucrative market price", they further said.

Varieties of cat fish are selling at Tk 600 to Tk 650 a kg in the local market and pabda at Tk 450 to Tk 500 per kg.

Officials at the department said over 20,000 people of the district are engaged in fish farming in the district. Over 44,000 hectares of area are now under the fish cultivation in the district with a view to producing around 0.5 million tonnes of fish.

Trader Md Hamidul Islam of Adamdighi upazila said, "We purchase fish from the cultivators directly and send those to different areas across the country."

"I cultivated pabda fish on my 44 decimal pond this season. My production cost was Tk 12,000," said Hamudul Islam of Dupchanchia upazila.

Pabda has a high demand in the market and it sells at a good rate as well.

"I have already made a profit of Tk 33,000 and am expecting more", he further said.

District fisheries officer Rawshon Ara said, "We provided all necessary support to the district's fish farmers so that they can produce more."
