The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has ended its scheduled six-hour hunger strike in Dhaka much earlier following a request from the law-enforcers.
The strike was observed demanding immediate release of the party’s Chairperson Khaleda Zia who was put behind the bars since she was jailed for five years in a graft case last week.
Starting at 10:00am on Wednesday in front of the National Press Club, the non-violent protest programme was declared to be continued till 4:00pm.
Party leaders said they agreed to call off the strike nearly two hours before the schedule thanks to a request put forth in this regard by the police.
Local TV channels report that BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said no conspiracy will prove to be enough to continue jailing of Khaleda Zia.
Among others, party Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed, Nazrul Islam Khan and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury with hundreds of leaders and activists joined it.
BNP's different district and city units are also scheduled to observe similar programme at any time and place they find convenient, reports UNB.
The hunger strike is part of BNP’s three-day programme which included a human chain in front of the National Press Club on Monday and a sit-in in front of the party’s Naya Paltan office on Tuesday.
