The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) demolished 200 illegal establishments during an eviction drive in Savar’s Aminbazar and Gabtoli area on Tuesday.

Officials of BIWTA later said one-and-half-month will be needed to free both sides of the Turag and Balu rivers from encroachers.

During the eviction drive, local people tried to obstruct the drive at Palpara area, said joint director of Dhaka port AKM Arif Uddin.

Besides, a number of establishments were also dismantled during the drive alongside the river at the estuary of Bongshi River, UNB reported.

The first phase of the eviction drive along the Buriganga and Turag rivers ended on February 18.

Some 2500 illegal establishments have been demolished so far during the drive.
