BIFS accorded reception to new Indian HC

Bangladesh and India are in negotiations for the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which will create the framework for taking advantage of economic growth both India and Bangladesh present to their partners, Indian High Commissioner Pranay Kumar Verma said on Wednesday evening.

He was addressing a programme organised by the Bangladesh-India Friendship Society (BIFS) to accord reception to him.

He noted that both countries have expanded the areas of cooperation in recent years Ian turned the bilateral ties into a role model for others.

“We are working together to build energy connectivity," he said adding that both the units of the Rampal Pieer plant will be in operation this year.

“And we also have an energy pipeline carrying high-speed diesel from one of our refineries in Assam to the northern part of Bangladesh, which will provide a very precious energy community at a time when the world is grappling with the energy crisis,” Mr Verma added.

“So these are some of the reasons which we are trying to work together to meet each other's cooperation to ensure that we work on the basis of the conviction that our prosperity and well-being,” he said.

He mentioned that the Indian High Commission is working on making the visa regime more simpler, and streamlined.

Speakers at the function stressed the need for further strengthening of bilateral ties between India and Bangladesh to ensure mutual benefit for both countries.

They also underscored the need for implementing the initiatives taken by the two prime ministers of both countries for taking the ties to a new height.

Joint secretary of Bangladesh Awami League Mahbubul Alam Hanif was the special guest in the programme, which was also addressed by, members of the AL advisory committee Mozaffar Hossain Paltu, and Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed, General Secretary of the organisation Narayan Saha Moni.

The President of the organisation Md Rashidul Alam presided over the function.

In his address, Mr Hanif said that India has always been a pioneer in promoting the struggle of the Bangalees for independence.

And when the war of liberation started they extended all-out cooperation to ensure the victory of Bangladesh against Pakistan.
