BGB man drowns in Sonai river

A member of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) drowned in Sonai River in Satkhira’s Kolaroa border area on Saturday night after being tangled in a rope used to smuggle goods.

The deceased was identified as Lance Nayak Rafiq, 35, of Kolaroa Kakdanga BOP and hailing from Kishoreganj district.

Lt Col Mohiuddin Ahmed, commanding officer of BGB-33 battalion was quoted by UNB news agency as saying that the smugglers hanged a piece of looped rope under the river water to transport smuggled goods through Bangladesh-India border.

Lance Nayak Rafiq spotted the rope while chasing a gang of smugglers at around 9:30 pm to recover some smuggled goods, said the commanding officer quoting locals.

When Rafiq was pulling the rope, the smugglers from the Indian side were also pulling the rope. At one stage, Rafiq got tangled in the rope and drowned in the river water, he added.
