MAGURA, Feb 04: Bean cultivation is turning fortune of farmers in Magura. Farmers informed, low production cost and high price are encouraging them to cultivate beans.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Magura sources informed, 10 years back bean was cultivated in the district on about 70 hectares land. This year bean is being cultivated in the district on about 130 hectares land. That is bean cultivation has increased in the district by about two times within 10 years.
Mujibur Rahman, a farmer of village Belnagar under Magura Sadar upazila said, this year I have brought my three bighas of land under bean cultivation. In the meantime I have earned Tk 80,000 from my bean and I am expecting Tk 40,000 more. My production cost will stand at about Tk 30,000. That is my profit will stand at Tk about 90,000.
Amrita Shn, a farmer of village Ramnagar under Magura Sadar upazila said, at present about one hundred families are cultivating bean. Bean cultivation has brought solvency in the families. By cultivating bean on one bigha of land we can earn Tk 30,000 as profit. Such profit is not possible from paddy, wheat or other crops.
Ishak Ali, a whole seller of vegetables in Dhaka road area of Magura town said, bean of Magura has a good demand in the market in capital city. Now bean of Tk 1.0 to 1.2 million are being sent to different parts of country from Magura. Consequently farmers are getting fair price of bean.
Magura DAE official Shohrab Hossen said, bean cultivation is turning fortune wheel of Magura farmers. Soil and weather of Magura are suitable for bean cultivation. We are providing the bean farmers with proper training and advice.
