BD to fight terrorism, militancy through sports, PM expects

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said Bangladesh will fight militancy, terrorism and drug addiction through sports.

The Prime Minister came up with the statement while addressing the opening ceremony of the first-ever Bangladesh Youth Games at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka on Saturday.

"We can save the youth from the menace of drug abuse and ensure advancement of the country through sports," she said.

Sheikh Hasina expressed her hope that the latent talents of the remote areas would be flourished through the games.

Sheikh Hasina termed sports as essential factor for sound health and mind as well as for developing love towards the nation.

The PM also wished the success of Bangladesh Youth Games-2018 expecting the event to show the youths to new dream and create future sports stars.

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, also tournament organising body chief, addressed the function as the special guest.

Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) President Army Chief General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq delivered the welcome address.

State Minister for Youth and Sports Dr Biren Shikdar and Deputy Minister Arif Khan Joy and BOA Secretary General Syed Shahed Reza were also present at the function, among others.

According to BSS, BOA organised the weeklong competition drawing 2660 under-17 athletes from eight divisions for 1,114 medals including 342 gold medals in 159 events.
