BD sees 1,776 deaths with Covid-19-like symptoms

Dhaka division reported 371 deaths while the toll in Chattogram division hit 552 during March 22 to July 11

A total of 1,776 people died with Covid-19 like symptoms in the country during the period between March 22 and July 11, according to a latest report.

A project styled 'Bangladesh Peace Observatory (BPO)' under Centre for Genocide Studies at Dhaka University revealed the report.

BPO has prepared the report based on information it collected from 25 media outlets, including national and regional dailies, TV channels and news portals.

But this information has not been verified at field level.

BPO has regularly been publishing reports on multiple issues with financial support from United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Dhaka division reported 371 deaths with such symptoms from March 22 to July 11 while the death toll in Chattogram division climbed to 552 during the same period.

Mymensingh division recorded lowest 57 deaths, the BPO report said.

The death toll in Sylhet, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna and Barishal divisions rose to 95, 183, 81, 227 and 210 respectively.

BP in its report said law enforcers arrested 87 people from March 08 to July 11 on charges of spreading rumour and false information about the virus.

At least 230 people were reportedly fined/penalised for violating health and safety regulations, raising prices and selling adulterated drugs to the public.

Besides, 583 people were arrested for embezzling relief materials, adulterating food and violating government guidelines on the pandemic as of July 11.

Fines were imposed on 11,475 people across the country from March 08 to July 11.

According to BPO, 231 incidents of torture and social stigmas were reported as of July 11 which took place centring the coronavirus situation in different parts of the country.

A total of 212 incidents of protests occurred in different districts between April 26 and July 11.

In addition, 135 incidents of violence countrywide took place over disputes following the coronavirus incidence from March 12 to July 11.

Some 18 people were killed and 553 injured in such incidents, according to the BPO report.
