Bangladesh's position in respect of overall rule of law performance is one of the lowest in the globe, according to the 2017-2018 of the World Justice Project (WJP) index.

Bangladesh ranked 102nd among 113 countries, advancing one position from 103rd in the 2016, revealed the WJP Rule of Law Index, the world's leading source for original data on the rule of law.

Besides, the country has been placed in the 4th position out of six countries in the South Asia region and 24th out of 30 among lower middle income countries.

The WJP released the Rule of Law Index recently, which gauges rule of law adherence in 113 countries worldwide based on more than 110,000 household and 3,000 expert surveys.

Featuring primary data, the WJP Rule of Law Index measured countries' rule of law performance across eight factors: Constraints on Government Powers, Absence of Corruption, Open Government, Fundamental Rights, Order and Security, Regulatory Enforcement, Civil Justice, and Criminal Justice.

According to the WJP index, the top three overall performers in the 2017-2018 WJP Rule of Law Index were Denmark (1), Norway (2), and Finland (3); the bottom three were Afghanistan (111), Cambodia (112) and Venezuela (113).

Globally, a majority of countries worldwide saw their scores decline since the publication of the last WJP Rule of Law Index (in October 2016) in the areas of human rights, checks on government powers, and civil and criminal justice.

Regionally, South Asia's top performer in the index is Nepal which moved up be five positions to the 58th place out of 113 countries worldwide, the index revealed.

With the exception of Afghanistan, which stayed in the 111th place, all of the countries in this region improved in the global ranks.

Sri Lanka improved most dramatically, moving up by nine positions to the 59th place out of 113 indexed countries.

Singapore ranked 13th, at the top of the list of Asian countries in the WJP Rule of Law Index, followed by Japan in the 14th position. South Korea is ranked 20th globally and is the third ranked state in Asia in terms of how people experience protection.
