Ambassador Sheikh Mohammed Belal, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the OPCW (Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons), proposed to provide capacity building measures for the development of the countries.
This was proposed enable countries like Bangladesh could face eventualities like what happened at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on 13 February 2017 where a chemical weapon, the Schedule-1 nerve agent VX, was used against a DPRK national, said UNB citing a media release of Embassy of Bangladesh in the Hague.
The Bangladesh Ambassador came up with the proposal during the inaugural meeting of the open-ended working group for the preparations for the Fourth Review Conference, 21-30 November 2018.
Bangladesh also proposed to include implementation of relevant SDGs to bring the benefit of peaceful use of chemistry to ordinary people.
All proposals of Bangladesh were received with wider support in the floor of the OPCW on 25 January 2018.
Bangladesh Ambassador Sheikh Mohammed Belal also had exclusive meeting with the Chairperson of the Fourth Review Conference to formally provide Bangladesh proposal for their consideration.
Ambassador I Gusti Agung Waseka Puja, Chairperson of the Fourth Review Conference, appreciated Bangladesh's constructive role and requested to provide more creative suggestions towards successful conclusion of Review Conference.
Bangladesh National Authority for CWC (BNACWC), headed by its Chairman and Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division, Lt. Gen. Md. Mahfuzur Rahman, is already providing extensive trainings for practitioners of chemical industry and first responders in Bangladesh.
