BD doesn’t need mitigation measures for environment

Bangladesh has no obligation for adopting mitigation measures while dealing with climate change issues, said Prime Minister's Energy Advisor Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury on Saturday.

"We're just producing only 0.4 metric tonnes (mt) of carbon per annum while a developed country is producing 20 mt per annum. Their responsibility is just 40 times more than ours," said he.

Dr. Elahi said it at the concluding session of the Sector Leaders' Workshop at Bidyut Bhaban in Dhaka.

He, however, said Bangladesh can do something in the adaptation part of the climate change issue, reports UNB.

The energy advisor said the power and energy sector's main objective is not dealing with the climate change.

Rather, the solution of power and energy problem has been the main target, he said.

Energy Secretary Nazimuddin Chowdhury chaired the function. It was also addressed by State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid, Parliamentary Standing Committee Chairman on power and energy ministry Tajul Islam and Power Secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus.
