RANGPUR, Jan 13: The cultivation of Baukul, a kind of plum, is getting popular in many areas of Rangpur division and hundreds of growers are making good profit from the sale of the fruit in recent years.
Growers are farming the fruit abundantly across the region, sources said. This year the growers of the fruit in different areas under the division are witnessing a good yield of the tasty fruit, sources also said.
The soil of many areas including Rangpur, Nilphamari, Thakurgaon, Dinajpur and Panchagarh districts of the region are suitable for its farming, according to agriculturists.
Aminul Islam, a Baukul grower at Mahiganj area under Rangpur Sadar upazila told The Financial Express that he has been successfully cultivating Baukul in his land for the last six years and selling those at a good price. Witnessing his success, many people have engaged themselves in its cultivation, he said.
Munna Mia, another Baukul grower of Wapda area at Sayedpur upazila in Nilphamari district said that he has more than 100 saplings of Baukul in his orchard. As the plants have been replete with fruits this year, he has already begun harvesting those. He expressed satisfaction over the yield of the fruit.
A good number of growers under the region said they have been cultivating the fruit in their homestead as well as other lands for many years and selling those at a good price.
Horticulturist Mezbahul Islam of the DAE said they have advised the farmers to cultivate Baukul as the cultivation of the fruit is profitable and its production cost is less than that of many other crops or fruits.
They provided the farmers with quality saplings and latest technology in order to boost yield of the fruit, he further said.
High land is better than low land for Baukul cultivation. So its farming is gaining popularity in the high land areas of the region, he added.
