BARI-1 pointed gourd cultivation proves profitable in Gopalganj

GOPALGANJ, June 22: Farmers of Fukra union under Kasiani upazila in the district have achieved an abundant yield of BARI-1 pointed gourd this season.
A good number of growers said they happy over the production and present market price.
According to the officials at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Kasiani, a total of 22 hectares of land have been brought under the vegetable cultivation in the district this year with the production target of 660 tonnes.
Amrita Mondal of Shaflidanga village said he cultivated BARI-1 pointed gourd on 30 decimal of land spending around Tk 30,000.
The grower further said he has already made a profit of Tk 50,000 from the vegetable till now.
The farmer said he is expecting Tk 40,000 more from the rest of his produce.
Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officer, Fukra Block of Fukra union Uttam Barai said BARI-1pointed gourd farming is profitable. Small and grassroots farmers should grow the item on commercial basis for more profit.
Besides, it requires low production cost but ensures a healthy return.
Kasiani Upazila Agriculture Officer Rashamoy Mondal said the vegetable is a short-duration one. One maund of pointed gourd is selling at Tk 1,000 in the local markets across the district.
Nirod Chandra Biswas, another farmer of Shaflidanga village, said he cultivated BARI-1 pointed gourd on 13 decimals of land spending Tk 14,000. He expects to get around 38 maunds of the vegetable from his field.
