Many areas of Habiganj district inundated on Saturday as bank of Sonai River washed away following flash flood triggered by heavy rain and surge of water from hills.
Many areas of Habiganj district town went under knee water and many roads were submerged causing trouble to communication and movement of home bound people during Eid, reports BSS.
The situation aggravated when a portion of the east bank of Sonai River collapsed Saturday morning following incessant rain.
More than fifty villages, a vast land of crops and vegetables were submerged while many ponds and fish farms completely washed away in the flood.
Most affected villages are: Alabongpur, Bahara, Kashimpur, Belapur, Mohanpur, Mongalpur, Kamalapur, Krishnapur, Sreedharpur and Montala.
The flash flood also caused water logging at different areas of Hobigonj town submerging many schools, markets and residential areas.
Head teacher of Aparupa Hig School said flash flood inundated school floor damaging furniture and building.
Local people said unplanned development work and siltation of Khoyi River and illegal grabbing of ponds and drains aggravated the water logging problem.
General Secretary of Hobigonj Paribesh Andolon Tofazzal Hossain said people of the town for long time have been suffering from water logging caused by illegal grabbing of Khoyi River and unplanned drainage system.
Demands of the civil society members for excavation of the Khoyi have long been ignored despite regular demonstration to resolve the problem, he said.
