Bangladesh’s virus deaths cross 1600-mark; recoveries hit 50,000

DGHS reports 39 more fatalities, 3946 fresh cases

The death toll from coronavirus (Covid-19) in Bangladesh crossed 1600 mark and the country’s tally of recovery crossed the 50,000 mark on Thursday.

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported 39 deaths from the deadly virus in the 24 hours to 8:00 am today, the 110th day of the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

With the latest victims, the death toll due to the virus infection reached at 1621, Additional Director General of the DGHS Dr Nasima Sultana said.

According to the DGHS, a total of 3,946 people were tested positive afresh by the virus, during the same period, taking the number of such cases in the country to 126,606.

Among the diseased, 32 were men and seven women, while two were between 21-30, one was between 31-40, seven between 41-50, nine between 51-60, twelve between 61-70, seven between 71-80, and one were between 91-100 years old.

Ten deaths were from Dhaka division, ten from Chattogram, five from Rajshahi, five from Khulna, three from Mymensingh, two from Barisal, and four from Rangpur division.

Twenty-eight people died in hospital and eleven died in their homes, the DGHS senior official added.

Simultaneously, 1,829 people recovered from the respiratory disease, bringing the overall number of recovery to 51,495, Dr. Nasima said.

A total of 17,999 samples were tested in 66 labs across the country during the period. With this, a total of 678,443 samples have so far been tested in the country.

On Wednesday, 37 people died and 3,462 people tested positive for the highly infectious disease.

According to the state-run Directorate General of Health Services, 63,998 people now remain in both home and institutional quarantine while 13,429 others in isolation.

Globally, the virus has so far infected 9,548,808 people and killed 485,408 of them, according to Worldometer data.

Of the infected, 3,872,891 are currently being treated while 58,104 of them are in serious or critical condition, the website data shows.
