Bangladesh’s virus deaths cross 2800-mark

DGHS reports 50 more fatalities, 2856 fresh cases

The death toll from coronavirus (Covid-19) in Bangladesh crossed the 2800 mark on Thursday, 138th day of the virus outbreak in the country.

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported 50 deaths and 2856 new cases from the deadly virus in the 24 hours to 8:00 am today.

With the latest, the country’s number of Covid-19 infections now stands at 2,16,110 people, said the DGHS at a virtual press briefing today (Thursday).

With the new deaths, the country’s total deaths reach to 2801, according to the state-run DGHS.

Additional Director General (administration) Prof Dr. Nasima Sultana said a total of 12,398 tests had been done across the country during the reporting period.

The new tests take the tally of diagnosis to 1,098,987 in the country, she said.

"Some 2,006 victims have recovered from the disease bringing the total figure to 119,208," she said.

Of the new deaths, 41 are male and 9 are female, Ms. Sultana said, adding that three were between 31 and 40, seven between 41 and 50, twelve between 51 and 60, sixteen between 61 and 70, eight between 71 and 80 and four were between 81-90 years old.

Forty-seven died in hospitals and three died in their homes, she added.

According to the state-run Directorate General of Health Services, 59,591 people now remain in both home and institutional quarantine while 18,860 others in isolation.

On Wednesday, 42 people died and 2,744 people tested positive for the highly infectious disease. 

However, Bangladesh is now the 16th hardest corona-hit country in the world and sixth in Asia, the Worldometer data revealed.

Neighbouring India, a nation of billion-plus population, tops the list of total cases in the continent with 1,241,416 cases, followed by Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey until Thursday 3:06 pm, according to Worldometer data.

As per the global list, Bangladesh is following Turkey that has reported 222,402 cases so far while Columbia is one step behind the south Asian nation with 218,428 cases.

So far over 15,395,767 people have been infected with the deadly virus which originated in China in December last year. Of them, 630,720 people died from coronavirus.

Of the infected, 5,392,981 are currently being treated while 66,239 of them are in serious or critical condition, the website data shows.
