Bangladeshis slip to second largest expat group in Oman

For the second year, Bangladeshi nationals have been overtaken by Indians as the largest expat community in Oman.

In 2018 there were 640,575 Bangladeshi nationals living and working in the Sultanate compared to 654,812 Indians, Times of Oman reported citing data from Oman's National Centre for Statistics and Information.

The Sultanate's official data also showed that in 2017 there were 692,164 Bangladeshis and 688,226 Indians who resided in Oman.

The English-language daily, however, did not give any data on the number of Bangladeshis and Indians who went to live and work in Oman or who left there in the last two consecutive calendar years.

Before Indians overtook Bangladeshis as the largest expat community in Oman, the latter had made up the bulk of migrant workers in the Sultanate for years, the newspaper said.

Pakistani nationals and Filipinos followed Indian and Bangladeshi nationals at third and fourth place in the ranking of the largest expat groups within the country.

Other top nationalities include Egyptians, Ugandan, Sri Lankans, Nepalese and Tanzanians.
