Bangladesh has welcomed the ruling delivered by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Myanmar's objections to a genocide case over Myanmar’s treatment of the Rohingya minority.
The preliminary objections of Myanmar were based on the application or admissibility of the Genocide Convention in the case filed by The Gambia against Myanmar.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) in Dhaka said on Friday said the ICJ rejected all four preliminary objections of Myanmar on legal and procedural grounds, reports UNB.
"Bangladesh maintains that the question of international justice and accountability will be critical in finding a durable solution to the Rohingya crisis."
“It would also prove to be a confidence-building measure for the sustainable repatriation of the Rohingya to their homes in Myanmar with their legitimate rights restored,” MoFA said.
According to Reuters, a 13-judge panel of the ICJ on Friday issued a ruling, paving the way for the case to be heard in full.
"The Gambia, as a state party to the genocide convention, has standing," she said, reading a summary of the 13-judge panel's ruling.
The court will now proceed to hear the merits of the case, a process that will take years.
The Gambia took up the Rohingya's cause in 2019, backed by the 57-nation Organisation for Islamic Cooperation, in a suit aiming to hold Myanmar accountable and prevent further bloodshed.
