Bangladesh, Sweden to work together on climate change

Bangladesh and Sweden made commitment to work together on issues related to the former's renewable energy, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, development activities and climate change.

Sweden's Minister for International Development Cooperation Per Olsson Fridh expressed his firm commitment to work together on these issues at a bilateral meeting on Sunday with the Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change Md.  Shahab Uddin.

They also discussed cooperation with Bangladesh in some other areas including ecosystem management, sustainable environment, conservation of biodiversity including terrestrial and aquatic animals, management of medical waste, control of various types of pollution and tackling the effects of climate change in Bangladesh.

During the discussion, Deputy Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change Begum Habibun Nahar, Swedish Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexandra Berg von Linde were present.

Referring to the celebration of the golden jubilee of Bangladesh's independence, Shahab Uddin extended greetings to Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation Per Olsson Fridh.

The minister said his ministry has planted 10 million saplings across the country on the occasion of the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, which will play an important role in protecting the environment.

The meeting identified areas of cooperation between the two countries and emphasised on moving forward together in the future.

Referring to Sweden's strong position to save the planet, he said his country would work closely with a friendly country like Bangladesh.

He lauded the Delta Plan-2100 and the Eighth-Fifth Annual Plan adopted by Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, the Swedish minister invited the Bangladesh minister to attend the UN Conference on Human Environment in Stockholm + 50.
