Bangladesh would start administering the second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine, Covishield, from April 08, a senior health official said on Sunday.

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) additional director general (planning and development) Meerjady Sabrina Flora said this to the media after an event at the Central Medical Stores Depot (CMSD).

Attaching importance to fully follow health guidelines, she said people must maintain social distance alongside wearing mask even after their inoculation for containment of the deadly virus.

The government started mass vaccination against novel coronavirus with the jab manufactured by the Serum Institute of India from February 07, 2021.

Bangladesh, a country of nearly 170-million people, received the first consignment of 5.0-million doses from the producer on January 25.

In the following month, it received another batch of 2.0 million shots while the Indian government gave some 2.0 million as gift.

Over 4.8-million people received Covishield developed by University of Oxford until Sunday and nearly 1.4 others are also waiting to get vaccinated.

In the past 24 hours as of Sunday evening, 80,222 more people were vaccinated across the country, with only six recipients reporting AEFI (adverse events following immunisation), officials said.

With the latest figures, the entire tally of the first round of those immunised reached 4,840,969 while the overall AEFI number stood at 906.

Of the vaccine-takers, the DGHS data showed, 3,040,522 were male and 1,800,447 female.

On the other hand, the overall number of the registered people to get inoculated has passed 6.1 million.
