Bangladesh sees three rapes a day in 2020

More than three women and children in the country were raped daily on an average in 2020, according to an annual report of a women's rights organisation.

Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP) revealed that at least 1,346 women and children were raped while 200 others women and children were the victims of rape attempts during that year.

The BMP prepared the statistics after collecting data from 13 national dailies, the report cited.

The annual report mentioned that at least 3,440 incidents of torture and sexual violence including rape against women and children were reported from January to December 2020.

At least 468 women and children were killed due to different reasons while deaths of 252 others were reported as mysterious, the BMP data said.

Some 164 women and children committed suicide, according to the BMP report.

Some 125 women and children were kidnapped while 101 were trafficked, the report further said.

A total of 117 were tortured for dowry and 52 of them were killed for the same reason, according to the BMP report.

There are a total of 117 reports of child marriage and 33 of them were child marriage attempts, it said.

At least 43 women and children were fallen victim to cyber-crimes, the report added.

Some 159 were the victims of physical torture, the BMP further unveiled in its report, saying apart from this, 13 were victims of cyber-crimes and other incidents last year.
